Knowledge modeling and technical communication

When you write technical documentation, you manage a great deal of knowledge. Technical communicators evaluate and apply domain knowledge every day. For that, skills in knowledge modeling are extremely useful.

Knowledge modeling means that knowledge managers create a formal description of a domain, for example, of the product portfolio of their company. For modeling knowledge, you do not necessarily need expensive software. You can already use fundamental principles of knowledge modeling in your everyday software tools to structure information.

If you want to go one step further, you can use the vocabulary of formal languages defined by the international standards organization W3C. The languages RDF, RDFS, and OWL are frameworks for formalized knowledge models that are machine-readable, for example by search engines and semantic content delivery platforms.
